About Crackenback

Crackenback is a small alpine locality in the Snowy Mountains, nestled between Jindabyne and Thredbo along the Alpine Way. Sitting at around 900m elevation, it offers a quieter, more private alternative to staying in town — with most properties backing onto bushland or with sweeping views across the valley to the peaks of Kosciuszko National Park.

The area takes its name from Lake Crackenback, a picturesque reservoir that runs along the valley floor and is popular year-round for fishing, kayaking, and early-morning walks. In winter, the lake regularly mirrors the snow-capped peaks above — one of the most photographed scenes in the Snowy Mountains.

Wildlife is abundant throughout the year. Eastern grey kangaroos are a common sight in the paddocks at dusk, and the birdlife along the lake foreshore is exceptional. It’s the kind of place where the pace slows down the moment you arrive.

Whether you’re planning a winter ski holiday or a summer escape into the mountains, Crackenback accommodation puts you in the heart of the Snowy Mountains region — close to everything, but far enough from the crowds to feel like a genuine retreat.
